Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Teaser Trailer
Season 6 Preview

"I was there. Until the very end."
—Melinda May

It's been a week since this spectacular teaser for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 came out and I missed it completely. Where was I? Why did no one tell me? You turn off notifications for a minute and forget to turn it back on for six days, and suddenly you've missed something huge that you've been waiting for on pins and needles.

I don't like what this means for our beloved Agent, but I did love the reveal. "You're from S.H.I.E.L.D." "Never heard of it." Very intriguing. At least we still get Clark Gregg, even if we can't have Coulson; just directing an episode wasn't going to cut it for me. He'll do as incredible a job as he's ever done, and the entire team is going to keenly feel his loss while having to deal with this new person with Coulson's face. I hate this, but I adore it at the same time. Get those tissues ready.

I was hoping all these months that Coulson had just turned to ash with Thanos' snap, so that maybe there would be a way to get him back. Then, after all these months of waiting, May says that. Ouch, that one hurt. But this new season looks beyond amazing already. The teaser makes it look like they have a bigger budget than ever. Beyond that, it's going to be deeply emotional, as MAOS has always been, and mind-blowing and just damn cool and fun to watch.

I could have used a teaser like this right at the end of season 5 to keep me from being all pessimistic; Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had gone a long way in killing that part of me. I have always had faith in this show, from the very beginning. But that ending - which felt like a series finale because it almost was - was so gut-wrenching that I didn't know what to do with myself or how to write about it. Coulson was going off to die. Fitz had already died! They saved the world, but they couldn't save Talbot.

I was done for a while. I needed time to gather together all the pieces of my hope that had been shattered. That started knowing the team would do everything they could to find Fitz frozen in space before their adventure into the future. That was helpful. That was hopeful. Still, the Fitz of season 5 was gone, his final scene phenomenally acted by Iain De Caestecker. The next time we see him, he'll have no idea what everyone went through, what he went through, that he's even married to Simmons. I have no idea how that will play out, but I'm excited to see what Iain does with it.

I never did do a recap or review of the season 5 finale, or most of the last two seasons, but I do have a really long draft. It's full of both praise ("astonishing") and hoplessness ("ruined"), which is a part I'll have to tone down. The frustration and pain were real, though, so some of it has to stay; it really kind of depends on how season 6 goes. I'll finish it one day. I am determined to, because Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., going by the teaser, will be the same as ever: well-written, beautifully acted, and so surprising.

This too-short video interview with Clark Gregg, which he tweeted earlier today, is how I found out about all this.
